This is a new series based on photos taken during a trip to Bell Island on November 8th. There is a small map below. After the ferry brought us over, we crisscrossed the island in my friend’s car. Most of the pictures that I will post were taken from the car itself. The hope is that this will be a document of our exploration of the island, and in the theme of this blog, of discovering it again.
If you are familiar with photography, you may notice the photos below were taken with the popular Hipstamatic app. I wish I could say that I carefully considered using it, but the truth is that I was just curious of its popularity and wanted to try it out. Also, there was a photo essay from Foreign Policy a few months ago that I really liked called The War in Hipstamatic. It was a collection of photos, all taken with the Hipstamatic app, that documented the war in Afghanistan. Obviously it benefited from the skills of professional photographers, with knowledge of composition, and lighting, and of all other things that create beautiful photography (and of which, I am not familiar). But I thought that, if it’s good enough for them, then it’s probably good enough for a day trip to Bell Island. In the end, I think I was very lucky. The app recreates the style of old film and cameras. It really gave the photos a feeling of a vintage road trip or family vacation, and basically produced this series for me very easily.
