Magazines #3: Gambling in Atalantic Canada, Atlantic Insight 1983
Magazines #2: “Women are drinking at St. John’s Corner Tavern”, Atlantic Insight 1979
This magazine article was found in an old copy of Atlantic Insight that I bought at a second-hand bookstore. It’s basically a snapshot of a bar in transition. Historically the St. John’s Corner Tavern was a “men only” bar. By 1979 it was admitting women but on a gradual basis. I found this to be interesting mainly because I did not know that men only bars were common. My experience, which is only recent, is that men more often go to bars to find/see women, not to avoid them.

The article describes the Corner Tavern as being on the corner of Hayward Avenue and Fleming Street. Today there is another bar in the same area called The Georgetown Pub. It’s shown below. I am not sure if this is the same bar as the St. John’s Corner Bar but it’s does inhabit the corner of those same streets.
Magazines #1: Newfoundland Quarterly Spring 1985
This is the Spring 1985 issue of the Newfoundland Quarterly. The advertisement featured below was found on page 2 of the issue. I think it is a pretty good example of a style of print advertising that is not very common today. Besides its style, the advert is endearing for other reasons. It references Newfoundland Telephone, along with the old, previously ubiquitous, logo. And it has a very indirect way of putting across its message. At first I was wondering how seagulls were able to answer the phone.
Found at Afterwords bookstore, Duckworth St., St. John’s, on 29/05/2011.
