Desktops #4

This finishes off this series. Unlike the previous desktop posts, the appeal of this one is subtle.  I like it because of the phrases.  This one desk has: “LOLA COLA”, “I ❤ Mark”, “Summer Skin”, “HEY TONIGHT”, and my personal favourite, “Bacon Lettuce Tomato” inscribed in a heart.

Desktops #1: “Silence of the lambs”

I was in a classroom recently and I noticed that the desks were defaced.  It’s a low-grade form of vandalism, but it’s still from the same impulse that has led to most of my posts so far.  And while this is a ubiquitous problem for probably any school with a desk in it, and in that way it’s a bore, I have also noticed that by taking a photograph it places it in a new context.  Seeing these desks in a photograph immediately allows for an easier comparison to a wall sprayed with graffiti.  The comparison shows that desk scribbling is more casual and absent-minded.  It appears that the unconscious is more at play.  In the example above, someone has written “silence of the lambs” and either “queen” or “queer”.
